Sharks On Three

A 1 track funk single (4m 8s) — released July 7th 2023 on Dune Castle Records

Cantrips is a Melbourne psychedelic groove and cinematic soul group led by multi-instrumentalist and studio producer Patrick Ryan. With heavy groove sensibilities, Ryan composes head nodding psychedelic funk music from the Dune Castle Throne Room, a DIY studio in Thornbury, Melbourne, from where he operates the label Dune Castle Records.

Cantrips presents Sharks On Three, a pulsating groove track as an ode to physical expression, basketball and the North Melbourne Sharks, a casual team that composer Patrick Ryan founded and has been a member of for 7 years running. A touchpoint of community, the Sharks have had over 50 sporting enthusiasts suit up in the ocean blue and crimson red colours, with a slew of artists, musicians, photographers, animators and more coming together to celebrate and participate in the beautiful game.

The track was recorded over one day in the Dune Castle Throne Room, and features members of Evening News, The Seven Ups, Don Glori, Sunfruits. Henry Jenkins (Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo, Emma Donovan & The Putbacks) produced the track.

Using a synth arppegiator as the pulse for this piece, this track begins with a bombastic hip hop drum track, before opening up into the psychedelic groove number that Cantrips has forged a name for. Head nodding, energetic and pulsating, this piece puts on show all that the 6-piece has to offer, with percussion dancing in and out of slinky guitar, while bass and drums hold the groove down.

This release follows a recent Cantrips 7" (For Private Use Only, featuring The Prayer and The Big Break) that received airplay and support radio in UK, EU, Australia and the United States, including Huey Morgan on BBC6, Andrew Jervis on Bandcamp Weekly, FIR (France).
